Our Vienna Guide
Awesome home-made ice-cream. Hostel faves are 'Biscottino' and 'Bitter Schokolade'. Or try the Rocher Cup if you're feeling especially glutinous. Closed in deepest darkest Winter, otherwise open until late, daily. We are here way too often in Summer.
Local joint with a decent atmosphere and really cheap pizza. If you're lucky the staff will be sober enough to remember to bring it to you :D. You can walk there in about 10 minutes.
Authentic, delicious little place, tellingly popular with Vienna's Korean community. About a 10 minute walk.
Hotel am Brillantengrund
Thoroughly hip place for breakfast! Not the cheapest, but glorious vintage surroundings and wonderful food. Check out the Unicorn Cycling breakfast :D. You can walk there in about 15 minutes.
Heuriger Herrgott aus Sta
Traditional Heuriger - Wine and food! A 5 minute walk from Ottakring U3 station.
Vienna's famous outdoor food market: Cheese, fish, olives, falafel, fruit & veg, etc etc, plus cafes and restaurants too. You can get a legit light lunch from all the free samples you'll be offered, but beware, they're wily businessmen around here! It's particularly worth being here on Saturday mornings, when there's a substantial antiques / fleamarket next to Kettenbruckengasse station. Neighbouring streets on the right side (heading towards Karlsplatz) also house a smattering of Japanese / Korean joints, if you've been craving ramen / sushi / kim-chi.
Flatschers Bistrot und Bar
Traditional Austrian food, plus beer brewed in-house, and just a short stagger home afterwards
An old-skool place, now geared up for travelers. Traditional decor and good Austrian food, plus international stuff like burgers. Open 18:00 - 06:00 Friday & Saturday; Until 02:00 the rest of the week. So close, you could literally roll home afterwards.
Gelateria La Romana
With so many ice cream places in Vienna its really hard to decide where to go. But La Romana its definitely one of the best. In walking distance from our hostel you can try here fresh italian ice cream with flavours you cant find anywhere else. The staff is really friendly and they calmly guide you through your decision making. It is so hard to pick even after you know most of the stuff.
Beaver Brewing Company
Excellent choice of craft beers. Very good food including vegan and vegetarian options.
Store and Bistro
A great option for those who prefer vegetarian food. Located close to Naschmarkt but tucked away in this quaint passage it has a fabulous courtyard. The food is lovely and you get chirping sparrows for company.
Dancing Shiva Superfoods
Great place to go if you're looking for a laid back place that serves super healthy organic vegetarian dishes.
Charlie P's Pub and Dining
Charlie P's (Irish Pub)
1516 Brewing Company
Great craft beer + Viennese food / burgers
Freiraum Restaurant Cafe Bar
Freiraum (fancier bar)
Hundred year-old little neighborhood gem, with great Austrian food and friendly staff, on a quiet little plaza. You can walk there in about 10 minutes.
Gerstner K. u. K. Hofzuckerbäcker
A must visit when in Vienna. Delicious cakes (Klimt Torte) and pastries, exquisite interior and awesome location.
One of the most popular coffee houses in Vienna, often with a queue out the door, but you shouldn't have to wait too long. Amazing Apple Strudel and some of the best chocolate cake in Vienna :). A pianist plays daily from 5pm until closing.
Beautiful, tasty... & 100% vegan! More then one location !
Nam Nam Deli
Great Indian food, funky decor. Lovely outdoor courtyard for warm days. Walk there in about 15 minutes.
Seriously authentic hole-in-the-wall Japanese joint, where for once it's not only about the sushi. There are only ten seats and it's a popular spot, so you might have to wait a bit. Totally worth it though!
I Ragazzi, Pizzeria - Ristorante
Those cheap pizza places all over the place are OK, but pay a bit more here for much higher quality. Various other excellent Italian dishes available too. An ex- colleague of ours still talks about the tiramisu like five years later.
Another recommended traditional winery, close to the vineyards.
Choice winery (with it's own vinyard) in Vienna's wine district. Lunch and dinner buffets. Has English website.
A hidden oasis close to the heart of the city, with a very mixed crowd, from aging intellectuals to young locals to un- tourists. Something for everyone, from carnivores to vegetarians, from breakfast (served until 3pm) to dinner. Prices are low, portions are large, food is simple but good.
Der Wiener Deewan
Lively pay-what-you-want Pakistani place in the university district. Self-service curries, etc, with plenty of veggie options. Expect a scowl from the owner if you give too little.
Ulrich is a great place to have breakfast/brunch. Very good coffee, many breakfast choices and very good atmosphere.
Very close to the hostel. Patricks (staff) favorite neighboorhood Cafe. Really friendly barista, tasty cakes and a lot of bio products that you can buy fresh from local farms. Coffee never dissapoints.
Extremely good middle eastern and mediterranean food. Always seasonal, very good cocktails and very friendly staff. Never lets me down. Staff favorite (Arbri)
